We Are Coming

Montgomery County Youth Orchestra

The Montgomery County Youth Orchestra is a 10-week program open to students of all skill levels between the ages of 8-18 years old in the Montgomery County and surrounding areas.  Led by conductor and accomplished string and wind educators, MCYO seeks to inspire young people to discover their full potential through creativity and performance.  Empowering and supporting students in developing the discipline required to accomplish musical goals, MCYO endeavors to provide artistic opportunities for all students and enhance the quality of cultural life in our community.

Orchestra I

This orchestra is for students with less than 2 years of playing experience.  Students will focus on the fundamentals required for playing in an orchestral setting including music reading, rhythms, playing positions, and understanding ensemble performance.  Students will perform fun musical pieces and learn exercises designed to help them grow in their musicality.  Students are generally playing pieces using 1-octave scales and solos similar to those found in Suzuki books 1 and 2 or similar methods.  For the benefit of all students in this group, it is required that all Orchestra I students also be enrolled in private lessons as well.

Orchestra II

This orchestra is for students with more than 2 years of playing experience.

Rehearsals focus on continuing mastery of fundamental string techniques, more complex rhythms, and increased level of difficulty in music.  Students are generally playing pieces using 1-2 octave scales (3 scales for some first violins) and solos similar to those found in Suzuki books 2 and 3 or similar methods.  Based on individual student proficiency, some students may be requested to also be enrolled in private lessons as well.

*if there are not enough students to make Orchestra II, advanced students will work in an ensemble together for the last half hour of class.*
